Report from South Australian Environment Protection Authority Radiation Protection Branch:

Apparatus compliance tested:  Convenient Low Dose Dental X-ray Unit

Manufacturer: Platino (China)

Serial No: TJX10080

Type: hand held / portable

Application: plain dental radiography

Tested By: Environment Protection Authority (SA)

Non compliances:

Length of beam limiting device [Reg 91(6)]

Exposure switch on tube head [Reg 91(10)]

Dead man function of exposure switch [Reg 91(13)]

Labelling (kVp, mA, exposure time) [91(14)(b)]

Focal spot [Reg 91(17)]

Consistency [Reg 91(19)]

Linearity [Reg 91(20)]

Tube Voltage [91(15)(b)]

Collimation: unknown

Conclusion:

The apparatus failed numerous compliance tests specified under the Radiation Protection and Control (Ionising Radiation) Regulations 2000.

Many of these tests are fundamental to the units effective operation as a diagnostic X-ray apparatus. In particular the high variability of

its tube voltage and its radiation output indicate that achieving consistent diagnostic images could be difficult. Radiation dose to the patient and

the operator could be unpredictable. These issues are inherent the unit’s design and are unlikely to be made compliant by service or modification.

The apparatus is therefore not able to be registered in South Australia or hence legally owned as an operable X-ray apparatus.
