Many veterinarians across Australia are offering free dental health checks for pets as part of Pet Dental Health Month.

President of the Australian Veterinary Association’s special interest group, the Australian Veterinary Dental Society, Dr Wayne Fitzgerald said most veterinarians across Australia are taking part.

“Anyone who hasn’t checked the state of their pet’s teeth recently is encouraged to call their local vet to ask about the free check up and see if they can arrange an appointment,” Dr Fitzgerald said.

“Periodontal disease is the most common infection in pets and there are a number of symptoms to look out for, including bad breath, pets choosing softer foods or chewing on the sides of their mouth, increased salivation, or pawing at their faces.

“Oral infections can be a source of misery for pets for months on end, and a dental examination can make the world of difference to their wellbeing. Periodontal disease can also be a more serious condition than many people may realise.” Dr Fitzgerald said.  “There is evidence that poor dental hygiene may lead to bacteria causing other health problems such as diseases of the heart, liver and kidneys.”

“We recommend that pet owners should be alert to possible problems with their pet’s dental health, and if in doubt, they should ask their veterinarian to perform a dental examination. Veterinarians can also offer advice about home dental care routines including appropriate nutrition and regular brushing. Pet Dental Health Month is a time to remind pet owners about the need for regular checkups.”

August 2007 marks the 10th year of the National Pet Dental Health Month, a nationwide effort to educate consumers on the importance of good dental care for pets.
